MacKay Bridge to close this weekend

By Caitlin Snow May 21, 2025 | 3:52 PM

It might be a bit trickier crossing the harbour this weekend.

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) says the MacKay Bridge will close Friday, May 23 at 8 p.m. until Monday, May 26 at 5:30 a.m.

It is for lane reconfiguration, cable inspections and a lighting project at the Victoria Road interchange.

When the bridge reopens on Monday, HHB says you can expect a new alignment through the middle where the former toll plaza was.

The speed limit will remain at 50 km/h while the site remains a construction zone.

The closure includes ramps at the Victoria Road interchange, including:

  • Princess Margaret Off-Ramp (Halifax to Dartmouth) will be closed starting Monday, May 26 for approximately six weeks for the construction of a ramp to the new roadway alignment. This is a new closure and will alter the current traffic flow.
  • Princess Margaret On-Ramp (Dartmouth to Halifax) will remain closed for an additional six weeks while a new ramp is built to accommodate the safe merger of vehicles to the new alignment. We thank the public for their patience as the timeline to reopen the on-ramp is extended.

HHB says the reason they are closing at 8 p.m. instead of 7 p.m., is to allow rush hour to taper off before they start work.

You are encouraged to plan an alternate route and expect delays.
