River Watch ends without significant flooding

By Brad Perry May 9, 2025 | 5:21 AM

New Brunswick has dodged another bullet this year when it comes to spring flooding.

The province’s River Watch program ended Thursday after two months in operation.

It provides info on the status of rivers and the potential for ice jams and other flood issues.

“We were fortunate this year’s freshet didn’t have significant impacts,” Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin said in a news release.

“While our risks from the freshet are over, I urge New Brunswickers to stay prepared for other dangers they may face, including wildfires and the upcoming hurricane season.”

The program is a joint effort involving the Department of Environment and Local Government, NB Power and the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization.

Other partners include Environment and Climate Change Canada, watershed groups, federal and provincial governments and United States agencies.
