Charges laid following robbery, sexual assault in unlicensed ride-share vehicle

Two people are facing charges after a passenger in an unlicensed ride-sharing vehicle was the victim of a robbery and sexual assault.

A woman had arranged for a ride through a group chat just before 11:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Upon getting in the ride, the victim was threatened with a weapon by another occupant.

The suspects told the victim to hand over their belongings and also demanded that they e-transfer funds.

After completing the transfer, the victim was able to exit the vehicle, and she reported the matter to police.

City police began an investigation and identified and arrested two suspects on Friday.

As a result, a 23-year-old is facing the following charges:

  • Robbery with a firearm
  • Forcible confinement
  • Uttering threats to cause death
  • Disguise with intent
  • Sexual assault with a weapon

A 21-year-old has also been charged with:

  • Robbery with a firearm
  • Forcible confinement
  • Possession of property obtained by a crime

The accused remains in custody with a future court date.

City police are asking members of the public to be cautious about using unlicensed ride-sharing services.
