Liberals win several Halifax area ridings

By Caitlin Snow Apr 28, 2025 | 9:10 PM

The Liberals have held onto many of their ridings in the Halifax area.

Shannon Miedema won the Halifax seat by a large margin, with the Conservatives in second place.

She says voters wanted her fresh perspective, including her career related to environment and climate change, as well as 15 years working with the city.

“So working in community for a long time, [I] have got a lot of good things done, and have been championing this city across the country and internationally. And I feel like that’s a lot of what I’m going to get to do in this role,” said Miedema.

Andy Fillmore stepped down from his position as Liberal MP in the riding to run for mayor and win. He held the spot from 2015 until last year.

Miedema says she admires his work, but she’ll do things her way.

She says housing is one of her priorities, especially in one of the country’s fastest growing cities.

Campaigning was more than she anticipated, saying she’s thrilled with how many people expressed their support while knocking door-to-door. She says most people are worried about what the Trump administration in the United States, as well as him threatening to make Canada the 51st state.

“And I think with Prime Minister Carney at the helm, they’re feeling a sense of relief that there’s kind of an adult in the room, a professional with serious clout, serious chops on the world economic scale, also with a climate background, also with a very solid reputation,” said Miedema.

Incumbent Liberal Sean Fraser has won the riding of Central Nova which encompasses Pictou County, the municipality of the District of St. Mary’s and sections of HRM.

Fraser and Conservative candidate Brycen Jenkins were neck and neck for most of Monday night, until Fraser pulled out the win.

Fraser threw his hat back in the ring after stepping away from federal politics in December to spend more time with family.

A phone call from Prime Minister Mark Carney changed his mind, even after a Liberal candidate was already selected.
