The majority of Haligonians will go out of their way to make American tourists feel welcome in our city, according to a new survey.
A poll taken by Narrative Research and Discover Halifax found that a strong majority of us -83 per cent- will be particularly welcoming to those visiting from the United States, this year.
Considering the tensions between our two countries are at an all-time high, residents were asked how they anticipate their “welcoming nature” would be for the remainder of 2025.
Going forward, most said they would continue to be this hospitable or even turn it up a notch.
However, about one quarter said they may be less welcoming amid worries about coming across a Trump supporter, but Narrative Research says many of us are able to separate views of the Trump administration from Americans, generally.
“Clearly Haligonians are living up to the Maritime reputation of being welcoming, despite the current political climate, and understand the importance of tourism to our economy,” Maragaret Chapman, COO and Partner of Narrative Research.
As for the benefits of tourism, 78 per cent believe they outweigh any downsides.
Ross Jefferson, CEO and President of Discover Halifax says the relationship between our two countries has deep roots here and Americans play a key role in our tourism economy.
“Tourism has long been a positive force in Halifax, and our warm welcome of visitors is something we take great pride in,” says Jefferson.
“We are delighted to see these results, and no matter the global landscape, we hope Halifax remains a place where visitors will always feel welcome.”
