NB Power crews are helping to restore electricity across Ontario following a massive ice storm.
The utility sent 61 people and 33 vehicles on Friday after receiving a request from Hydro One.
“We know how difficult and labour-intensive restoration work can be following an ice storm and are proud to help our fellow Canadians,” Spokesperson Elizabeth Fraser said in a statement to our newsroom.
“Before sending assistance out-of-province, we always ensure we have enough local resources to continue providing safe, reliable power to New Brunswickers.”
Fraser added that all costs related to their deployment will be covered, and NB Power customers will not be on the hook.
Premier Susan Holt took to social media over the weekend to thank the crews for their work.
Over a million homes and businesses experienced outages following last week’s storm.
As of early Monday afternoon, Hydro One was still reporting more than 51,000 customers without electricity.
The utility said more than 4,800 crew members are working to restore power, which includes mutual assistance from its contractors and 29 utility partners.
Hydro One said severe damage continues to be discovered, with more than 2,200 broken poles located so far.
