Premier Tim Houston is happy with the current legislative session.

Over the last 20 days, the government has introduced several Bills, including lifting a ban on fracking and uranium exploration.

Houston says it’s been an important session.

“We have to grow our economy, so the steps we’re taking around natural resources development, those are important for generations to come. It’s really necessary, and we have to have the courage to move forward,” said Houston after Question Period Tuesday.

Many spoke out against the changes at a Public Bills committee hearing last week.

There’s also opposition to other legislation that would let the government fire non-unionized civil servants without cause, and give more power to the province when it comes to universities.

“There’s a process for passing legislation. It allows Nova Scotians to come here and speak about their thoughts and concerns. The process works and it’s effective. Our obligation is that we’ll listen carefully, if we think we got it wrong, we’ll say that,” added Houston.

The province is also planning to help Nova Scotians get through tariffs.

Houston says there’s a chance to reset the relationship with the United States through the upcoming federal election.

“We have a contingency that will be available. We’ll have to look at impacted Nova Scotians and industries, and we’ll deploy that contingency as necessary. If it’s not sufficient, we’ll do more.”

When it comes to free trade within Canada, Houston says Nova Scotia is receiving national acclaim for their efforts.

He says he’s not interested in smaller regional free trade, it has to be country-wide.
