A northwestern Ontario engineering firm is expanding its operation in the region and southern Ontario.

TBT Engineering (TBTE), a firm that started in Thunder Bay has acquired and merged with LBE Group Inc. in Kenora and opened a new branch office in Ottawa.

TBTE now has five offices located in Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Kenora, Collingwood and Ottawa.

“With these expansions, TBTE is now a provincial firm, and as we look to the future, TBTE remains committed to the company’s independent roots and Northern identity, while continuing to evolve,” says President Scott Peterson. “We’ve made it a priority to grow in a way that keeps us connected to the North because that’s where our story started, but we recognize the opportunity to grow into new markets at this critically important time in our history as a company and a nation.”

The business started as a small materials testing lab with just two lab technicians in 1995.

Over its 30 years of operation, it has grown into an award-winning, employee-owned company, with a core workforce of 150 employees with intentions to continue to grow in the near future.

The merger with LBE Group is adding 15 new staff to the team.

The Ottawa expansion is adding to the company’s capabilities in Environmental and Geotechnical Engineering while bringing on new expertise in the fields of Hydrogeological services and Geoenvironmental Instrumentation and Monitoring.

The goal of the expansion and acquisition is to offer as many additional services as possible for their clients.

The company has previously acquired Profor Engineering in 2015, Sostratus Engineering in 2016, and EXP’s Northwestern Ontario Geomatic Operations in 2017.

The company expanded into Collingwood in 2023.
