As toll booths come down at the harbour bridges in Halifax, dozens of jobs are expected to be impacted.
CEO of Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) Tony Wright says there will be 11 affected, who work mostly for MACPASS, but HHB has received “positive commitment” from the government to help find them jobs elsewhere.
“Ideally into the public service itself or another crown agency.”
In addition to that, Wright says, there are about 20 GardaWorld staff who work at the toll booths that will also be impacted, but right now they are needed.
“We retain quite a few to help with traffic control and just making sure there’s a presence out in the lanes.”
However, Wright says, they have heard from Garda who says over time those individuals will be transferred to other contracts within the region.
According to a sign posted in the Halifax Harbour Bridges office, all those affected are getting word through individual letters that time is soon running out.
“The letter will offer full employment here until the 31st of May, but if you choose to seek employment elsewhere in this timeframe, you are free to do so.”
The sign goes on to say that the nature of employment at Halifax Harbour Bridges will depend on the work needed- such as traffic control and parking lot security.

Our newsroom reached out to Gardaworld and in an email they said they are working closely with Halifax Harbour Bridges on a smooth transition for all employees.
“Wherever possible, those impacted are in the process of being reassigned or offered new posts at other GardaWorld client locations.”
The Macdonald Bridge will be closed again this weekend as construction on removing the tolls continue, starting 7 p.m. Friday and is scheduled to reopen 5 a.m., Monday.
