There’s been a huge increase in passengers since it became free to ride transit in Yarmouth and a stop in at Wasoqopa’q First Nation (WFN) was added.

The town says about 2,000 more people rode transit last month, than January 2024 going from about 1,282 to 3,108 – a jump of 142 per cent.

The most since the service began in 2016.

Mayor Pam Mood says, to say they are thrilled with the response would be an understatement.

“Transit in our community isn’t just about getting from point A to point B – it’s about the ability to do so without today’s pressure of finding the funds to do so. The uptake is HUGE and comes from all aspects of ridership, including more students, seniors, families and more. Council has repeatedly said it’s one of the best and most impactful decisions we’ve made. And it was an easy one.”

Transit has been free for three months after forming a partnership with WFN.
