The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has expanded its border patrol capabilities by chartering two Black Hawk helicopters, operational since January 17, 2025.
The aircraft are focused on detecting and responding to illegal crossings of people, goods, and drugs at the Canada-U.S. border.
The Black Hawks, secured under a $5.3 million contract through Public Services and Procurement Canada, are being deployed daily based on operational needs.
The helicopters complement the RCMP’s existing fleet of nine, which includes thermal imaging and hoisting capabilities. This addition strengthens the RCMP’s ability to patrol between ports of entry, providing rapid response and greater coverage.
To support the onboarding of the helicopters, the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team has been assisting with operations and training.
When and where the helicopters will be used will not be shared publicly to avoid compromising details about operations.
