Premier Doug Ford indicated that an election could be on the horizon for Ontario as he seeks a clear mandate to combat potential economic challenges posed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.

Ford made his remarks at Queen’s Park on Monday, shortly after Trump’s inauguration for his second term.

“These are negotiations that are going to go on for quite some time right now. And make no mistake about it: he’s coming for us,” Ford said. “I need a clear mandate from the people of Ontario. Not for tomorrow, or the next day — for four years of dealing with our American friends.”

Ford indicated a new mandate would give Ontario a stronger voice in both Washinton and in Ottawa.

Trump’s inauguration speech focused heavily on boosting American manufacturing and border security, particularly with Mexico, but he did not directly mention Canada. However, while speaking with reporters later in the day Trump told reporters he planned to introduce tariffs up to 25 percent on Canadian and Mexican goods starting in February.

“We’re thinking in terms of 25 percent on Mexico and Canada because they’re allowing vast numbers of people … and fentanyl to come in,” Trump said.

According to many economists and business owners, the potential tariffs represent a significant threat to Ontario’s economy.
