UPDATE: Cleanup begins from winter storm

By Brad Perry Jan 20, 2025 | 8:51 AM

Many New Brunswickers are starting their week digging out after a winter storm brought plenty of snow to the province.

Snowfall and winter storm warnings that were in place have since ended as the worst of the system moves out of the region.

However, gusty winds could still cause reduced visibility in blowing snow throughout the day, particularly in exposed areas.

Both the Greater Moncton International Airport and the Saint John Airport reported around 19 centimetres of snow in total.

Here is a look at what volunteer observers reported around the province through CoCoRaHS:

  • Saint-Ignace: 24.9 cm
  • Wirrall: 21.3 cm
  • Chamcook: 20.1 cm
  • O’Donnells (Doaktown): 20.1 cm
  • Rogersville: 20.1 cm
  • Oak Point: 19.1 cm
  • Fredericton: 18.3 cm to 22.1 cm
  • Harvey (Albert County): 18 cm
  • Sackville: 17.8 cm
  • Hoyt: 17 cm
  • Miramichi: 16.5 cm
  • Grande-Digue: 16 cm
  • Grand Harbour (Grand Manan): 16 cm
  • Sussex Corner: 15 cm
  • New Maryland: 11.9 cm
  • White Head (Grand Manan): 10.4 cm

No mail delivery

Canada Post has issued a red delivery service alert for the entire province due to inclement weather and snow.

Delivery is being suspended until conditions improve and it is safe for service to resume, said the Crown corporation.

“The safety of our employees is our number one priority,” Canada Post said in a statement.

Travel conditions

Officials were advising against travel on several major highways earlier in the day but those advisories have since been lifted.

However, drivers are still urged to use caution as crews work to clean up the snow that was left behind by the storm.

Saint John Transit said its buses are operating but there may be delays or detours due to road conditions.

If you plan on flying on Monday, it is a good idea to check the latest arrival times at the Greater Moncton International Airport, the Saint John Airport and the Fredericton International Airport.

School closures

All schools in the Anglophone East, Anglophone South and Francophone South school districts are closed.

Anglophone West has closed all schools in zones three to nine, which includes the Grand Lake, Oromocto, Fredericton and Woodstock areas.

In Anglophone North, schools in the Rexton, Miramichi and Bathurst areas are closed, while those in the Campbellton, Dalhousie and Jacquet River areas are open.

NBCC campuses in Saint Andrews, Fredericton and Woodstock are closed for the day, while campuses in Moncton, Saint John and Miramichi are opening at noon.

The University of New Brunswick campuses in Saint John and Fredericton are closed until noon.

Mount Allison University in Sackville has also delayed opening until noon, while the Moncton campus of l’Université de Moncton is closed until 10 a.m.
