Unexpected heavy snowfall hits Yarmouth

By Kevin Northup Jan 15, 2025 | 3:02 PM

An unexpected winter wonderland in Yarmouth.

Snow squalls hit our region Tuesday afternoon and evening, leading to icy roads and school closures Wednesday.

Meteorologist Ian Hubbard with Environment Canada says the highest recorded snowfall total was 25 centimetres in Port Maitland.

“We had a report of 18 centimetres in Tusket, and as much as 13 centimetres in Yarmouth. As you move further toward Shelburne, those amounts dropped off,” said Hubbard.

He says there were flurries in the forecast, but one squall that moved in brought higher amounts.

Hubbard says squalls are very tricky to predict, and it wasn’t until late Tuesday when the forecast was adjusted.

“It’s hard to pin down where the snow is going to be highest. When we issue our forecast, it’s for a large region.”

The snow isn’t expected to stick around long, as above-freezing temperatures and showers are forecast for the weekend.
