Unifor members have ratified a new four-year collective agreement with CN, avoiding a strike in the new year.
The union represents more than 3,000 members at the railroad’s Council 4000 and Local 100 committees.
In late November, workers voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action that would have seen them walk off the job as soon as January 1st.
The two sides then reached a tentative agreement earlier this month. Ratification took place Sunday.
In a release, Unifor states the agreement includes meaningful improvements to wages, benefits, and job protections for those working in CN terminals and headquarters across Canada, including rail car technicians, heavy-duty mechanics, administration, customer support and fleet mechanics among others.
Unifor is this country’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy.
