Southeast N.B. residents happy about quality of life: survey

By Brad Perry Dec 9, 2024 | 5:04 AM

Southeastern New Brunswick residents and businesses are generally happy about their quality of life and municipal services.

That is one of the key findings in a recent survey conducted by Navigator for the five chambers of commerce in the region.

More than four in five residents in the region rated the overall quality of life in their community as either excellent or good.

When it comes to the region’s economy, business respondents were optimistic, with four in five calling it either excellent or good, compared to just under three in five residents who filled out the survey.

Ratings for municipal services in the region were a mixed bag, the survey found. There was strong support for the efficiency of waste management collection, the care of green spaces and the upkeep of recreational facilities.

However, road maintenance, police services and public transit scored poorly, along with access to health care in the region.

Support for immigration has softened since previous surveys. While 61 per cent of business respondents said they “totally support” immigration, only 33 per cent of residents said the same.

There was also a difference of opinion on affordability, with one in five business respondents and two in five residents saying the region was unaffordable.

“This research is extremely valuable to all five Chambers because it helps inform their advocacy work in the year ahead,” Kim Wilson, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton, said in a news release.

“We will be sharing the data with all levels of government to lobby for more efficient and better public services.”

The survey was conducted from Oct. 9 to Nov. 11 with 200 public respondents and 196 business respondents. It has a margin of area of =/- five percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
