There’s a sense of fear among residents in an area of Digby County.
In Clare: gunshots, fires, intimidation and threats have been taking place for months.
RCMP can link most of the crimes to an organized crime ring that profit off unauthorized lobster fishing.
Sgt. Jeff LeBlanc says there are a number of open investigations, and people have been afraid to speak out for fear of repercussions.
“We’re investigating four shootings into residences, and 10 arsons that we can specifically relate to this organized crime group,” says Sgt. LeBlanc.
The most recent violent incident was on November 23, when a home had bullets fired into it.
That investigation is ongoing, two days later two men were arrested on intimidation charges.
Sgt. LeBlanc says RCMP are here to protect, and the more they hear from the public, the quicker investigations can take place.
“We recognize there is a mindset of fear of speaking out, and people afraid that they’ll become a target. You can call us, there’s no requirement to provide your name or personal information. We’re seeking assistance from the public on information that can progress our investigations. Our main goal is to provide security for the public.”
He adds there are seven officers at the Meteghan detachment, and additional resources have been brought in when needed.
There have been calls locally and provincially toward the federal Department of Fisheries to better enforce illegal lobster fishing.
Sgt. LeBlanc notes that teamwork is important.
“Crimes are being committed, and criminals don’t look at it as being investigated by us or Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Crimes are crimes. When investigations fall into another organization’s jurisdiction, we try to engage and have a partnership and work together to solve that crime.”
He says they’ll continue to work with all organizations, including the Municipality of Clare.
