First Nation declares state of emergency over drug crisis

By Caitlin Snow Feb 10, 2026 | 2:30 PM

A First Nation has declared a state of emergency over what they call an “escalating crisis” involving illicit drugs and addictions.

In a statement on social media, Sipekene’katik First Nation says they are facing too many emergencies, overdoses and tragedies.

“The loss, fear and trauma experienced by our families, Elders, youth and frontline workers cannot be ignored,” reads the post. “The situation has reached a point where decisive and immediate action is required.”

Actions being taken involve enforcing their housing policy where they suspect drug activity is taking place and a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction for those selling the drugs.

This includes, but is not limited to, cocaine and illegal prescription drugs.

Sipekene’katik says the measures are being implemented due to the level of harm in the community.

“Too many lives are at risk,” says the statement.

Sipekene’katik says to be clear, actions taken are not aimed at those who suffer from mental health and addiction but instead, those who profit from it.

Chief and Council are calling on the community to stand together to protect their people, support one another, speak up with lives are at risk and choose safety over silence.
