The old Sobeys on Pleasant Street is significantly damaged after an overnight fire, Sunday morning.

According to Halifax Fire District Chief, Steve Bussey, crews arrived to smoke at the one-story strip mall around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

It was quickly upgraded to a second alarm fire which prompted another two fire engines to assist with putting out the blaze.

“The main Sobeys structure was the only portion of the building that was actually affected,” he says.

“It was abandoned at the time and there was a couple of other shops that were affected. We’re working with the building owners to get those occupancies back in play.”

The was officially declared under control around 7 a.m. this morning.

Bussey says there were no injuries or casualties.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Police say the roadway was shut down between Prince Arthur St and Arthur St. in Woodside for half of the day.

The Halifax Professional Fire Fighters union says more than 30 firefighters helped fight the blaze, preventing other occupied businesses from it.
