HRM program makes building secondary units more affordable

By Natalie Chiasson Feb 4, 2026 | 11:54 AM

Home owners in HRM will soon be able to build more than one secondary unit — like backyard mini homes or basement suites — on their property.

The province says the Secondary Unit Incentive Program has expanded their application deadlines and eligibility to include non-profit organizations and housing co-ops.

You can receive up to $13,000 per unit to help offset costs for water and sewer installations.

Those interested now have until October to apply, and any new construction must be complete by April 1, 2027.
