Halifax Regional Police are warning residents about a concerning scam after a victim was targeted by someone pretending to be from the Canada Border Services Agency.

Police say the incident happened on January 23 around 5:50 p.m., when the victim received a phone call claiming their spouse had been arrested and would be deported unless bail was paid immediately. According to investigators, the scammer instructed the victim on how to withdraw the money and arranged a method for it to be collected.

Police say the scammer also appeared to have taken control of the victim’s phone in a way that allowed them to track the victim’s movements and keep them on the line through the entire process.

Officers are reminding the public that scammers often try to create a sense of urgency to push people into acting quickly without thinking or seeking advice. Police say anyone receiving a call like this should hang up right away and avoid giving personal information, banking details or any form of payment.

HRP says anyone who has lost money or had their identity compromised due to a scam should call police at 902‑490‑5020. People who receive scam calls but weren’t victimized can report them to the Canadian Anti‑Fraud Centre.
