Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has says there are no grounds to charge an RCMP officer after a man was seriously injured during an incident in New Minas last summer.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) released its findings this week, determining the officer’s actions did not contribute to the injuries.

The case began on August 25, 2025, when paramedics were called after a man jumped out of a moving vehicle.

He suffered a head injury and refused medical treatment, prompting police to be contacted under the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act.

Two RCMP officers attended and tried to convince the man to go to the hospital, but SiRT says he refused and challenged officers before reaching for a bag inside the vehicle.

Police attempted to handcuff him, and a struggle followed.

He was eventually taken to a hospital in the community and later airlifted to Halifax.

Doctors determined the man sustained a fractured skull, a temporal bone fracture and other injuries consistent with the fall from the moving vehicle.

SiRT concluded the officer involved acted within the law and did not contribute to the injuries. A longer summary of the report has been posted on the agency’s website.
