A 43-year-old man from Liverpool is facing several charges after RCMP say he personated a police officer in Cookville and later stole a dump truck in Queens County.

Police say the first incident happened on December 26 when the man approached an officer outside the Cookville RCMP detachment and claimed to be an RCMP sergeant recently transferred in from another province.

He was in street clothes and arrived in a black pickup truck. When asked for identification, police say he was unable to provide any and was arrested.

He appeared in Bridgewater Provincial Court on December 29 and was released on conditions.

On January 1, Queens District RCMP responded to a report that a dump truck had been stolen from a garage on Devonshire Road in West Caledonia.

Police later located the vehicle on Highway 3 in Liverpool and arrested the driver. The investigation indicates the suspect went to the garage the day before and stayed overnight before taking the truck.

The man is now charged with personating a peace officer, break and enter with intent, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime and two counts of failing to comply with an order.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on February 4.

The case follows another impersonation incident reported in Cumberland County in 2025, where a driver was accused of posing as a police officer during a roadside interaction.

RCMP say anyone unsure about the identity of an officer can request police identification or confirm through a non-emergency line, and should call 911 in an emergency.
