It has been a chilly few days across Atlantic Canada.

We rang in the New Year and welcomed 2026 with lots of snow. That was followed by extreme cold temperatures, dipping down to lows of around minus 17, with wind chills much colder than that.

We’ll get a bit of a reprieve later this week with temperatures climbing a bit above zero.

For those hoping the milder temps will stick around for the rest of the winter, that’s probably not going to happen.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Jill Maepea says winter is really just getting started, “There’s still lots to come. January and February. These are prime winter months. I mean, January is our coldest month of the year, so we’re definitely going to see more snow for the rest of this month. Climatologically speaking, that’s the way it should work.”

Maepea adds we could see a bit of mixed precipitation, with rain and snow this week, with the rising temperatures.
