Another First Nation speaks out over cannabis crackdown

By Caitlin Snow Dec 18, 2025 | 1:16 PM

Another First Nation is speaking out against the province’s crackdown on illegal cannabis sales.

It was earlier this month when Nova Scotia announced there would be increased police enforcement amid concerns about safety and the unregulated market.

In a statement on their social media page, Thursday, Millbrook First Nation says they are disappointed by the threats to their freedom.

“As a community that has already experienced significant colonial violence at the hands of the justice system, this is an unacceptable threat to our right of self-determination, and the safety of our community,” reads the statement.

“Millbrook will take the necessary steps to protect our community from the actions of the provincial government.”

Millbrook says it has repeatedly urged the province to work collaboratively on cannabis sales that respects their rights, including “the right to trade to earn a livelihood.”

“The minister’s directives were issued without any consultation or co-operation with the Mi’kmaq and show a shocking lack of understanding of Mi’kmaw rights and the province’s constitutional obligations,” says Millbrook.

Their statement follows concerns from Sipekne’katik first nation, last week.

The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs says the approach was disrespectful.

Millbrook says they will continue to govern cannabis in its community under Mi’kmaw laws.
