SIRT clears Sussex RCMP officer after injury review

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has cleared a Sussex RCMP officer after reviewing a case where a young man was injured during an arrest.

The finding comes from SiRT’s director, who is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police in New Brunswick.

The incident happened on June 26, 2025, when police were called to a group home about a resident who was violent and damaging property.

The agency says the first officer on scene found a young adult male outside the home holding a large piece of asphalt near a broken window.

SiRT said the man was arrested for mischief and placed in the back of a police vehicle, where he began thrashing and yelling.

The agency explained that the officer opened the door to handcuff him to prevent further harm or damage.

During the struggle, the man spat in the officer’s face.

SiRT reports the officer lifted the man’s arm behind his back to apply handcuffs and heard a “pop,” realizing the man had been injured.

Emergency Medical Services were called immediately, and the man was later diagnosed with a fractured elbow.

SiRT said the RCMP contacted the oversight agency the same day, which led to the investigation.

The director concluded there were no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence.
