Prosecutors in Los Angeles have announced first-degree murder charges against Nick Reiner in connection with the deaths of his parents, acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Tuesday that his office will file two counts of first-degree murder, along with a special circumstance allegation involving multiple victims.

Prosecutors are also alleging that Reiner personally used a dangerous weapon, identified as a knife.

Hochman said the charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty. He added that no decision has been made at this time on whether prosecutors will seek capital punishment.

Police say Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found fatally stabbed Sunday inside their home in the Brentwood neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Nick Reiner was arrested Monday and booked on suspicion of killing his parents.

Hochman cautioned the public against speculation, rumours, and unverified information circulating online.

“If it doesn’t come from the district attorney’s office, from LAPD, from the coroner’s office, or from the courtroom itself, then there is a good chance you are hearing misinformation,” he said.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as deeply emotional, noting that crimes involving family members are among the most difficult for investigators and prosecutors.

“This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal,” McDonnell said.

Prosecutors say the charges are expected to be formally filed later Tuesday.

Reiner will be brought before the court for arraignment once he is medically cleared.
