Registered psychiatric nurses (RPN) will be able to practice in Nova Scotia very soon.

The province says it is because they have changed the nursing regulations under the Nursing Act.

In a news release, Health Minister Michelle Thompson says it is about expanding the roles that can support mental health.

“Moving forward, these nurses will be recognized for their unique skill and supported to work to their full scope of practice so they can make the intended impact,” says Thompson.

RPN’s have specialized training and education that prepare them to work in a variety of mental health and addictions settings.

They will be regulated by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing.

Nine other provinces and territories either regulate RPN’s already or soon will.

The amendment takes effect, Monday, December 1, with recruitment set for January.
