A new look at an old idea in Quispamsis

It’s not a new idea, but the Town of Quispamsis is going to take a fresh look at adding an access point between Route 1 and Millennium Drive.

Coun. Emil Olsen said traffic has increased year by year since Millennium Drive was constructed.

Olsen proposed town staff investigate a new access point somewhere along Millennium to lower the volume of traffic contributing to congestion as the road is developed.

Chief administrative officer Ian Watson said he’d consulted with the town’s director of engineering, Gary Losier, about Olsen’s request.

“He (Losier) was able to confirm that, yes, this had in fact been considered some time ago,” Watson said. “At the time, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure had some reservations around the sufficient distances that were required for the nearby weigh station on Route 1.”

Watson said any investigation by the town would likely include preliminary discussions with the provincial government and the Town of Rothesay.

“And it’s reasonable to expect that we would incur somewhere in the order of $10,000 worth of design fees,” Watson said.

Losier said a joint request from Quispamsis and Rothesay was made when Millennium was built that would have seen an on-ramp and off-ramp on the westbound lanes of Route 1. The ramps would have been located around the intersection of Millennium and Donlyn Drive.

Coun. Kirk Miller supported Olsen’s idea, pointing out new developments on the Rothesay end of Millennium Drive will see the population increase and bring more traffic to the area.

Council voted to instruct town staff to investigate the proposal and report back.
