A large crowd gathered near Alderney Landing on Wednesday as opposition continues to build against a proposal to infill part of Dartmouth Cove for future development.

More than 80 people took part in the mid-day rally, which ran until early afternoon and drew residents, business owners, environmental advocates, and community groups.

The demonstration follows Transport Canada’s recent approval of amendments submitted by the developer behind the project.

The proposal would allow the company to use construction materials to fill in a section of the cove, with long-term plans to develop the newly created land.

Community concern escalated after that approval was made public earlier this month.

A biodiversity dive held in the cove shortly afterward documented a wide range of marine life, which organizers say underscores the ecological value of the area and the potential impact of infilling.

Protesters at Wednesday’s rally urged the province to intervene, noting that provincial approval is still required before any work could begin.

Many said they fear the project will move ahead unless the government steps in.

The province has said a decision on the file is expected before the end of the month.
