About 60 people gathered outside One Government Place early Wednesday afternoon to protest the province reviewing a municipal by-law to protect Dartmouth Cove from infilling.
The premier recently said the by-law was ambiguous and the province may review the by-law passed by the municipal council.
Jill Brogan, one of the founders of the Save Dartmouth Cove advocacy group, says the government needs to stop the overreach.
“The Department of Municipal Affairs needs to just back off and let those bylaws stand.”
Halifax municipal council passed a by law to protect Dartmouth Cove from infilling, similar to another by-law passed last year to protect the Northwest Arm from infilling.
Brogan says the government was not looking to get involved then, so they should stay out this time.
According to multiple reports, the Premier has called Tom Hickey, CEO of Atlantic Road Construction and Paving, a personal friend. Brogan says that does not look good in this situation.
“We’re hoping that this government will walk back the notion that somehow these by laws are ambiguous or were without cause.”
