The provincial government has declared November as Family Violence Prevention Month.
The province says the campaign is meant to bring people together to create safer and healthier communities.
“This month, we honour survivors, thank those on the front lines and support organizations that bring care and hope,” Lyne Chantal Boudreau, minister responsible for women’s equality, said in a government release.
She said education, awareness and support are essential to creating a safer and more respectful future where families can live free from violence.
The government said the declaration highlights ongoing efforts to prevent family violence and encourages collective action to reduce its impact. The campaign also points to Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, as a key date.
The Fergusson Foundation, which has worked for four decades to eliminate family violence in the province through funding, education and support services, also voiced its support.
“Family violence affects everyone, including individuals, families and communities,” Jay Michaud, president of the foundation’s board of directors, said.
“It is a widespread issue that holds back healthy growth and development in society. Family Violence Prevention Month reminds us to work together to spread awareness, support those who have been affected and take steps to create a safer, more respectful future for everyone.”
