Some long-term care workers at Bisset Court nursing home in Cole Harbour have voted in favour of going on strike.

CUPE Local 4970, which presents the workers, says they voted 100 per cent in favour of walking off the job, according to a news release.

Branch president Trina Walker says they are forced to prioritize bare necessities every day instead of more attentive care.

“People keep saying that no one wants to work anymore. That’s not true. No one wants to work full
time with mandatory over time, and still not be able to afford their basic necessities like rent, food,
or a vehicle,” said Walker in the release.

They say understaffing is a major issue, with only half of the province’s long-term care facilities meeting the bare minimum of workers to give residents the recommended 4.1 hours a day of care.

The release does not say when they might hit the picket lines.
