The Holt government announced Thursday it’s fulfilling one of its major campaign promises.
Premier Susan Holt said the cost of carbon adjuster placed on the price of gas will be cut as of Dec. 1. The cut is expected to reduce the price of gas by more than eight cents per litre.
“This will save you money at the pumps, around eight cents a litre,” Holt said. “It could result in savings of $150 to $200 for a typical New Brunswick household that fills up once a week.”
Holt said the government heard from retailers, wholesalers, non-governmental organizations and a public intervener through both a legislative committee and the Energy and Utilities Board.
Energy Minister René Legacy said the government heard concerns from the fuel sector, but stressed the EUB has the tools and ability to consider legitimate cost pressures and make fair, evidence-based adjustments through established processes.
“Ultimately, our plan balances consumer affordability with market stability,” said Legacy.
Holt said the plan is part of her government’s efforts to make life more affordable for New Brunswickers.
“We’ve looked at a lot of different things, a lot of different ways that we might be able to reduce costs for New Brunswickers across a whole variety of expenses,” she said.
As for the price of gas, Holt said there’s nothing else imminent to bring further relief.
“We are constantly evaluating the tools and options, limited as they may be, that we have to help people.”
