Three Nova Scotians have been recognized for their teaching dedication.

They are among the 70 top educators across Canada to be recognized with this year’s Prime Minister’s Awards for their achievement.

From Dartmouth, Gordon Shane MacLeod from Dartmouth High School and Michael Jean from Cole Harbour District High School were both awarded for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

MacLeod takes the time to design inclusive lessons which reflect students’ backgrounds for them to feel represented in the curriculum.

He is deeply committed to both student success and equity in STEM and his impact spans classrooms, communities, and continents.

Jean cares deeply about his students, colleagues, and community.

Through his high expectations, vision, and true care, he helps students to see their school as a place of both possibility and pride.

From Antigonish, Michelle “Mickey” Mackenzie from Red Apple Children’s Centre won the Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

Mackenzie is described as a beloved early childhood educator with a creative vision who is a natural leader.

She is known for her ability to design imaginative and responsive classroom environments, including winter wonderland sets and adapting spaces to support emotional needs.

“Across Canada, teachers guide and empower the next generation,” says Prime Minister Mark Carney. “I congratulate the 2025 award recipients and extend my gratitude to all educators for their dedication, service and contributions to building a stronger Canada.”

These awards celebrate educators who drive innovation across the country by inspiring students to reflect, ask questions and challenge themselves.

Nominations for the 2026 awards can be made online until January 14, 2026 for Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, Teaching Excellence in STEM and Excellence in Early Childhood Education.
