Cape LaHave Island now permanently protected

A “beloved jewel” on the south shore of Nova Scotia has become one of the largest islands ever protected in the province.

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL) announced Tuesday, Cape LaHave Island will be conserved permanently.

According to the MODL, the move comes after several years of community engagement.

Nature Trust’s Executive Director Bonnie Sutherland says the island is one of Nova Scotia’s great treasures.

“Not only for the birds and pollinators whose habitat is now protected but also for the countless generations of people – past, present and future – for whom this island is so precious,” says Sutherland.

Mayor of MODL, Elspeth McLean-Wile says they are pleased the agreement will ensure the Island is protected for generations to come.

Cape LaHave Island is one of Nova Scotia’s largest remaining undeveloped islands.

Guardianship of the Island was transferred to the Municipal Council though the Lunenburg Common Lands Act of 1897.

It was to make sure it stayed accessible for the community but did not acknowledge its “ecological significance”.

The municipality recognized the importance of keeping the island as is and in 2019 Council explored a conservation easement.

Community engagements followed, where it became clear residents wanted the Island to remain undeveloped.

Ongoing protection and care of the Island will be made through the Nature Trust’s volunteer Property Care program.

Cape LaHave Island is Nova Scotia’s fifth largest island.
