Firefighters in Sussex were still on the scene of a fire at the Irving sawmill on the edge of town on Wednesday afternoon.

J.D. Irving, Limited said the fire is contained to a bark pile and does not pose a risk to employees or operations.

Sussex Fire Chief Tony Reicker said the Sussex Fire Department was working with the company’s fire brigade to watch for hot spots.

He said crews were called at 6:15 a.m. to the area of Route 890 and Wheeler Road, where they found flames on a large bark pile

The company said crews will continue to monitor and manage the fire until it is fully out.
