Water conservation measures are working in HRM, but remain in place

By Evan Taylor Sep 24, 2025 | 7:02 AM

Halifax Water says water use has declined since mandatory Stage 1 conservation measures were put in place for the Lake Major supply area on September 10.

The utility reports overall consumption is down by about five percent.

Officials say that’s a sign residents and businesses are responding to the call to conserve, but more effort is still needed.

With dry weather persisting and little rain in the forecast, Stage 1 restrictions remain in effect until further notice.

That means all customers supplied by the Lake Major Water Supply Plant must continue to follow the rules.

Some of the ways residents are being asked to reduce water usage include: reducing shower length, turning off the tap while brushing teeth, washing only full loads of laundry and dishes, and checking for toilet leaks.
