The Progressive Conservatives have tabled a bill in legislature, Tuesday, to help fast-track making the rules of the road more modern while focusing on safety.

The new Traffic Safety Act would replace the original passed in 2018 that was intended to replace the Motor Vehicle Act last written in 1932.

Public Works Minister Fred Tilley says it never became proclaimed because it became clear the act was too complex and the decision to pivot, was made in 2022.

“The new act simplifies how we will administer these changes so we can deliver a modern set of laws years sooner than would otherwise be possible,” says Tilley.

“These updates respect the intent of the original act by prioritizing the safety of Nova Scotians.”

Safety for all the users of the road will be included such as cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians and construction workers, with fines that would double if there was an injury or death.

There will also be new language around technology and vehicles that you hire -referring to Ubers.

In addition, government will be able to use photo radar, red light cameras and intersection cameras.
