A hot, dry summer, plus below-average rainfall has added up to increased pressure on Saint John’s water resources.
Saint John Water and other municipal departments are implementing water conservation measures.
Effective immediately, the City of Saint John is stopping all non-essential water use, including operation of splash pads, routine washing of municipal vehicles and equipment, and non-critical hydrant flushing.
A release from the City said the measures are meant to prioritize water for critical infrastructure, fire protection and residential use.
Residents have been asked to reduce their own water use to help protect the water supply.
Suggested actions include avoiding watering lawns or gardens and avoiding washing vehicles at home, and only running dishwashers or washing machines when full.
According to the City’s release, many industrial water users in Saint John have already taken significant steps to reduce water consumption.
Saint John Water will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
