Inquest makes recommendations to improve inmate safety

A coroner’s inquest has made recommendations aimed at improving safety for inmates in correctional facilities.

Two inmates at the Madawaska Regional Correctional Centre in Edmundston died within weeks of each other in 2022.

Wesley Geneau died of drug poisoning on Feb. 6, 2022, while Jarrett Lunn died due to complications from mixing meds on April 9, 2022.

A five-member jury heard from 11 witnesses this week and made recommendations to the correctional centre and the Vitalité Health Network.

That includes extending the period during which clients take their medications in the presence of staff to ensure proper administration.

Jury members also recommended checking emergency bags during staff changes to ensure they are complete.

Meanwhile, the deputy chief coroner recommended that the justice minister continue to support adult detention services in the search for new and improved technologies to counter the introduction of contraband into correctional facilities.
