Jobs will be lost with the Region of Queens Municipality’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) about to shut its doors in a matter of months.
In a release, Tuesday, the municipality says it is due to the changes in ways recycled materials are treated, when the Environmental Act was amended in August 2023.
The provincial government mandated that recycling of packaging, paper products and packaging-like products brought into Nova Scotia, is at the cost of the producer.
Circular Materials will now collect, manage and dispose of materials across the province, meaning plants like MRF will no longer be needed.
Willa Thorpe, Region of Queens Chief Administrative Officer says, “Our MRF staff have been an important part of the municipality’s workforce, and we are working directly with impacted employees at the MRF sit to help them transition at this difficult time.”
Curbside collection and public drop off at the Waste Management Facility will remain the same.
The recycle plant will close December 1.
