Air Canada and CUPE heading to mediation after flight attendants vote down deal

The union that represents 10,000 flight attendants and Air Canada are heading to mediation after members overwhelmingly voted down a tentative agreement.

In a news release Saturday, the airline says CUPE has announced the deal was not ratified.

According to the union, out of nearly 95 per cent of members that voted, 99.1 per cent said no.

In anticipation of this outcome, both sides agreed there would be no lock out or strike, with flights continuing to operate, but instead they would head back to the table.

The issue they will discuss, is wages.

If they still can’t come to an agreement, then they will head straight to arbitration.

Air Canada says the negotiations period has been challenging for stakeholders.

“We deeply appreciate the patience and confidence our customers have shown as we worked through this process. We thank all of our employees for their dedication at this time,” says the airline.

Members walked off the job August 16, disrupting hundreds of thousands of flights.

They were ordered back to work with binding arbitration, August 18, but ignored it and stayed on strike.

The two sides reached a tentative agreement, August 19.
