Saint John residents won’t be able to begin using their trails again, just yet.

Most restrictions on crown land were lifted at 12:01 am Tuesday, but the burn ban remains in place.

Despite the province’s decision, the City of Saint John is keeping its trails closed due to extremely dry conditions and a high fire risk.

That includes Little River Reservoir, Rockwood Park, and Tucker Park.

The City will keep trails closed until there is a significant improvement in the fire risk, including a healthy amount of rainfall.

It will monitor conditions closely and reopen trails only when it’s safe.

Fire Chief Rob Nichol supports the decision, saying, “Rockwood Park and our other trails are heavily wooded and still extremely dry. They are also all very close to residential neighbourhoods. Even a small spark could spread quickly and cause devastating damage. Temporarily keeping them closed is the safest option for residents and ensures we don’t risk losing these spaces. We appreciate the community’s understanding and support.”
