Twenty new generalist care beds have been added to New Brunswick’s long-term care system.
They are intended for residents who need daily assistance but do not require full-time nursing care, according to a government release.
The new beds are part of a facility expansion at Meadow Valley Manor in Saint John.
Social Development Minister Cindy Miles says the move is designed to reduce wait times and help more people transition into care.
“These new beds will help more New Brunswickers get the care they’ve been waiting for,” Miles said.
“We want to do all we can to help get people off waiting lists and into care homes.”
Generalist care beds serve individuals with health limitations who can live safely in a residential setting with support.
The province currently funds more than 5,300 nursing home beds and over 7,600 adult residential facility beds.
Minister for Seniors Lyne Chantal Boudreau said the expansion is part of ongoing work to ensure seniors receive appropriate care in residential settings.
