Cemetery damaged in International Falls, one arrested

An 18-year-old man from International Falls is facing several charges following damage to a cemetery and a high-speed police chase.

Police were first called early Wednesday morning about a vehicle squealing its tires at the Forest Hill Cemetery.

They located the vehicle on Memorial Drive, but the driver failed to stop for police, leading to a high-speed chase along the road and down Highway 53.

Police say speeds reached in excess of 90 miles an hour (145 km/hr).

Assistance was called from the Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office, who deployed a spike belt to slow the vehicle.

It travelled for another mile before it entered the ditch, allowing officers to make an arrest.

The driver was taken to Rainy Lake Medical Centre for a precautionary evaluation before being booked into the Koochiching County Jail on charges of reckless driving, fleeing from police, damage to property and driving while under the influence.

Police later returned to the cemetery to document what they called considerable damage.

The Koochiching County Attorney’s Office is also asking residents along Memorial Drive who suffered damages resulting from the incident to file a report to police.
