Fort Frances town council is giving tentative support to painting a crosswalk in recognition of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary.
The Fort Frances Branch is requesting that the crosswalk on Church Street be painted.
Administration is suggesting one across from the Branch on Veterans Drive.
Operations and Facilities Manager Travis Rob says they may not be able to paint the one on Church because it is classified as a crossover.
“In Ontario, a pedestrian crossover does have a number of strict and stringent marking rules in terms of what has to be on the ground for lines and other symbols,” says Rob.
He notes there may be less stringent regulations around crosswalks.
The Legion has offered some options for painting.
One has the silhouette of a soldier standing above the words ‘Lest we forget’ on a red and white striped background.
The idea has the support of council members.
“The option that they’re citing seems fairly simple to me,” says Brunetta.
“It’s mostly just red and white, and the more intricate patterns are on the curb. So I would definitely support this type of thing.”
Council has asked administration to come back with a report on how to complete the job, while examining any regulations that could impact the project.
The legions came to be in Winnipeg in November 1925 and were known as the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Services League, becoming incorporated a year later by a special Act of Parliament.
The veteran’s organization became the Royal Canadian Legion in 1960 following a royal patronage from Queen Elizabeth II.
The Fort Frances Branch was established in 1927.
