A new wage grid step will bring pay increases for eligible early childhood educators in New Brunswick this fall.
The province is spending $7.24 million to add a fourth step to the existing pay structure for educators working in designated early learning and child care facilities.
The new step takes effect September 16, according to a government release.
Entry-level educators currently earn $18.95 per hour at step 3. With the new step added, their wage will rise to $20.08, a six per cent increase.
Level 1 educators will see a 5.5 per cent boost, moving from $25.91 to $27.33 per hour.
Educators begin at step 1 and move up the grid annually based on experience. Entry-level educators start at $16.83 per hour, while level 1 educators begin at $23.29.
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development said the increase will be fully funded by the provincial government, with no changes to the operator’s base wage contribution.
“Wage increases are essential to retain and attract skilled professionals, reduce turnover and ensure children receive consistent, high-quality care and education during their most formative years,” Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson said.
The department said more information will be shared directly with child care operators.
“This wage increase is one step forward in our ongoing effort to support the early learning and child-care workforce,” Johnson said.
