The Fort Frances Lakers anticipate several out-of-town players joining the club this season.
That means a need for accommodations.
President Sarah Kivimaki is looking for anyone interested in being a billet family.
“You just open your home to a player of the Fort Francis Lakers,” says Kivimaki.
“You provide sleeping quarters. It can be shared with another player. There is a $600 a month payment that the players pay directly to you. We only ask that you be supportive, treat them like your family, and usually provide a supper for them.”
Kivimaki says there are other perks, such as season passes and special events for billet families.
Kivimaki says this could be one of the years where the Lakers have several out-of-town players on the roster, and would like to attract as many billets as possible before the start of the season.
The team is also looking for people who might be able to host a player for a few nights.
“If a new player is coming in and we kind of have to hold a player until there’s a roster change, we kind of like to have an emergency billet home.”
Kivimaki has hosted Lakers players for the past five seasons.
She says the boys quickly become part of the family.
“You’re there when to celebrate, when they win, and you’re there to talk them through the losses and the not-so-good times. You’re their home away from home.”
Those interested in becoming a billet home can contact Sarah at 807-275-6991 or email her at fflakerspresident@gmail.com.
