Elov Seger is one of three athletes to be inducted into the Fort Frances Sports Hall of Fame this Saturday.
A multi-sport athlete in high school, Seger focused much of his attention on hockey and starred for Michigan Tech in the 1960s, helping the team to two NCAA championship finals and winning the college’s first title in 1962.
The defenceman earned First Team All-American honours that same year.
Seger was not an offensive threat, notching just six goals and 20 assists in 72 college games, but his defensive skills brought him attention as Michigan Tech gave up fewer than 80 goals against in each of his final two years.
He would move on to the United States Hockey League to suit up for the Waterloo Black Hawks, where he was named their most valuable player in his first season.
With Seger as a main part of their defensive corp., the Hawks would go on to win the USHL title in the 1963-64 season, and the regular season crown in ’64-65, losing out to St. Paul in the championship final that season.
A move to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1965 would see Seger suit up for the Mustangs of the USHL and help them to championship final appearances in 1966 and 1967, losing out to Marquette both times.
During the summer of 1967, Seger was diagnosed with a brain tumour and passed away the following spring at the age of 27.
Seger’s talents and contributions to the game were recognized by the teams for which he played.
Michigan Tech created a trophy in his memory for their men’s hockey team’s most improved player.
Seger was also inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame in 1998.
The Waterloo Black Hawks of the now junior USHL honoured Seger last year as part of a Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.
